Ashkenazi told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday that the Kornet missile fired in the Gaza Strip penetrated the tank's outer shell but failed to explode inside. There were no injuries in the incident. "We are talking about a massive missile, one of the most dangerous in the battlefield, which has already been used against the IDF in the Lebanon War," he said. The Israeli army chief also said that the first regiment of the Iron Dome anti-missile system was expected to be operational in the beginning of 2011. "We'll decide how and where to station it." Israel hopes the system will provide it with means to dealing with rocket fire from Lebanon and from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Addressing the situation in Lebanon, Ashkenazi said the tensions were high ahead of the release of indictments by the international tribunal in the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. |
