GAZA, (PIC)-- The Gaza religious affairs ministry renounced Thursday a plan by Israel's Jerusalem municipality to erect a 180-house Jewish settlement district near the south Jerusalem district of Amlesson.

The 7977 A plan was approved in 2005 to create five residential buildings with 180 apartments on an area of 37,460 sq. meters of stolen land. Around 7 acres were to be preserved as green lands and set aside for public facilities, including a playground and synagogue.

The new plan cancelled out another previously approved plan 2683A to expand the entrance of the Amlesson-Ubaydi district, a move that would have devastated the area, disrupting urban expansion and hindering the movement of citizens.

Palestinian Minister of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, Talib Abu Sha'ar said the plan surfaced late amid attempts to safeguard it from opposition from city residents as settlement activity creeps into Arab neighborhoods of the city and Arabs are deprived of expanding.

Abu Sha'ar also denounced the Israeli government for digging up the graves of children near the entrance of the Al-Khalil city of Beit Ummar amid flashpoint clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians. The Beit Ummar entrance was closed off by dirt and cement blocks mounted there by bulldozers.

Abu Sha'ar, who is also head of the Jerusalem committee, called on the Arabs and Muslims to save Jerusalem and the holy sites from direct violations, saying that desecrating such symbols is forbidden under international law and norms, and divine religions.
