RAMALLAH (Ma’an) – A Palestinian woman died Saturday morning after suffering intense tear-gas inhalation during an anti-wall rally in Bil’in on Friday, medics said.

Palestinian medical sources in Ramallah said 36-year-old Jawahir Abu Rahmah, from Bil’in, died at Ramallah medical compound. Abu Rahmah inhaled large amounts of tear gas fired by Israeli forces who forcibly dispersed a non-violent rally protesting the separation wall.

The local popular committee said doctors fought through the night to save Abu Rahmah's life. She was diagnosed as suffering from poisoning caused by the active ingredient in the tear-gas, and did not respond to treatment, the committee said in a statement.

"We are shocked and furious for Israel's brutality, which once again cost the life of a peaceful demonstrator. Israel's lethal and inhumane response to our struggle will not pass. In the dawn of a new decade, it is time for the world to ask Israel for accountability and to bring about an end to the occupation," said committee member Mohammed Khatib.

Abu Rahmah's brother Bassem was killed in April 2009 by a tear gas canister fired at his chest by an Israeli soldier during a village demonstration.

Friday's rally was attended by Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Organizers said more than 1,000 demonstrators attended the final protest of the year calling for an end to Israel's land confiscations.

Israeli forces met the protest with tear-gas canisters, hitting one teenager in the face and sending him to hospital. Military officials said they were unaware of injuries, and that around 250 participated in the protest.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said the area was declared a closed military zone in advance of the protest "in an effort to prevent an escalation of the violent and illegal riot" that the village hosts weekly.

Jawaher Abu Rahmah, 36, was evacuated to the Ramallah hospital yesterday after inhaling massive amounts of tear-gas during the weekly protest in Bil'in, and died of poisoning this morning. Abu Rahmah was the sister of Bassem Abu Rahmah who was also killed during a peaceful protest in Bil'in on April 17th, 2010.

Doctors at the Ramallah hospital fought for Jawaher Abu Rahmah's life all night at the Ramallah Hospital, but were unable to save her life. Abu Rahmah suffered from severe asphyxiation caused by tear-gas inhalation yesterday in Bil'in, and was evacuated to the Ramallah hospital unconscious. She was diagnosed as suffering from poisoning caused by the active ingredient in the tear-gas, and did not respond to treatment.

Jawaher Abu Rahmah was the sister of Bil'in activist, Bassem Abu Rahmah, who was shot dead with a high velocity tear-gas projectile during a demonstration in the village on April 17th, 2009.

Suspicious groups discovered purchasing land in Jerusalem

[ 01/01/2011 - 04:52 PM ]

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Suspicious groups have been creeping into the predominantly Arab Jerusalem district of Silwan and offering residents to purchase land and claim to be sponsored by Arab and Islamic funds, the Wadi Halwa Information Center said, adding that locals uncovered that the would-be buyers were working to leak land into the hands of Jewish settlers.

Unidentified persons began a few weeks back handing out cards to register Jerusalemites who wished to sell property, some of the agents disguised as tool repair technicians who would enter homes and offer legal aid in cases involving Jewish settlers.

A local real estate agent known by Wadi Halwa residents for buying property was quoted as saying he planned to build after being issued a permit by Israel's Jerusalem municipality. But the municipality has zoned the neighborhood as a green section and does not issue building permits there.

The Wadi Halwa Information Center reported two separate incidents in Wadi Halwa and Wadi Batn al-Hawa of agents constructing there and leaking the property over to Jewish settlers.

Israel has made obvious moves to take full control of east Jerusalem, placing special emphasis on the targeted Silwan section. Authorities have announced plans to convert the area into a national historic park that would become part of the Jerusalem settlement known as David's City.

The occupation authorities had also taken significant steps in 2010 to separate east Jerusalem from the West Bank while violating the internationally recognized rights of the Palestinians, the Israeli rights group B'Ttselem reported to open the new year.

According to the report, Israeli troops killed a total of 67 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip last year. In another context, Israel's military prosecutor has yet to indict the soldiers who lethally fired at civilians.

Israel leveled 39 Palestinian homes and 90 more structures in 2010 mostly in the Issawiyya, Silwan, and Suwar Baher sections of the holy city, the Jerusalem Land Research Center reported Saturday. 280 citizens were ejected from their homes in the process and 242 more homes were ordered to be demolished.

The report reads that Jewish settlers erected 543 residential units that year, while 6,732 units were approved to be built. There are currently at least 5,458 Jewish settler homes spread over 17 settlements constricting the holy city of Jerusalem.

Detainee Nayrukh in clinical death

[ 01/01/2011 - 04:16 PM ]

WEST BANK, (PIC)-- The mother of Muhanad Nayrukh, detained in the PA jails in the West Bank, said on Saturday that her son had entered the stage of clinical death after he was rushed to hospital.

She told the PIC on Saturday evening that Abbas's security refused to allow any visit to Nayrukh in hospital but a paramedic told his relatives that he was in a state of clinical death after 39 days of hunger strike in Abbas's jails.

She said that the PA was refusing any visit to him fearing his condition would be declared to the public, the mother, who could not stop her tears, held Abbas's authority responsible for her son's condition.

The security militias loyal to de facto Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas transferred Nayrukh along with Majd Obeid and Wisam Al-Qawasmi to hospital on Friday after their health deteriorated due to the continued hunger strike staged in protest at those militias' refusal to release them despite court orders to that effect.

Obeid's mother, for her part, had earlier told the PIC that she was not allowed to visit her son in Bethlehem, but added she could speak with him via a remote window.

She quoted her son as saying that they stopped drinking milk on Thursday after those militias backtracked on their promise to transfer them to Al-Khalil in preparation for releasing them.

Humanitarian Aid Sails on Final Leg of its Journey to Gaza, Palestine

It is interesting that the role of India which is appreciated by leaders of especially the third world countries is from the days of Gandhi and Nehru. People like to avoid mentioning the changing foreign policy of India under the recent regimes, abandoning the cause of non-alignment and trying to jump on the bandwagon of developed nations and military powers.

Latakia (Syria, 1 January 2011): The Asia to Gaza caravan arrived to a grand welcome by the Governor of Latakia, Dr. Khalyl Mashhaddya, a cardio-thoracic surgeon, on 25th December, 2010, in the port city of Syria, with school children playing their band and raising pro-Palestine and pro-Syria placards on the street. Next day at a meeting the Baath Party office bearer and former Ambassador to India, Dr. Mohsen Alkhyyr, spoke fondly of the vision of Gandhi and role of Nehru in giving shape to the Non-Aligned Movement along with Nasser, Tito and Sukarno. While awaiting the clerance from Egyptian authorities for entering Gaza, the caravan members were invited by a host of organizations - of students, farmers, workers and engineers. The caravan members also visited the Al-aa-Deen camp of Palestinian refugees, some of whom came as far back as in 1948. This camp is also host to Syrian refugees from Golan Heights and some Palestinian refugees from Iraq. Except for the citizenship right the earlier refugees enjoy all the benefits entitled to Syrian citizens. But the Palestinian refugees admit quite unambiguously that they are the guests of Syrian government. The day the situation will become normal they'll return to their homeland after handing over their property to the Syrian government. The Syrian government also considers the Palestinian people as their own. The banner to welcome to caravan on behalf of Governor of Latakia read: 'The masses of the Governorate of Latakia Salute the Free Men of Convoy Asia (1) to Break the Siege of Our People in Gaza.' The caravan members have been received warmly in the Arab world as they are seen as supporting an Arab cause.

The Egyptian government gave permission to 120 people to enter Gaza as opposed to the promise of an earlier figure of 100 but was quite clear that they would not allow any Iranian citizens, including 7 members of parliament - Mahmoud Ahmadi Biqash, Avaz Heidarpour, Parvi Sarvari, Ali Motahhari, Ali Asqar Zarei, Hassan Qafourifard and Shabib Jooyjari. They also denied permission to 6 Jordanian activists, who have taken strong positions earlier not palatable to the Egypt, Israel or US. This was not totally unexpected. Egypt and Iran have strained ties for the last 30 years. Since the days when Egypt gave asylum to Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Camp David Accord after the Egyptian recognition to Israel, support to Iraq in Iran-Iraq war and in response Iran deciding to name a street after Khaled Islambouli, the assasin of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, there have been no diplomatic relations between Egypt and Iran. Lately, Iran's support to Hizbullah and Hamas is also a source of concern for Egypt. The First Asia to Gaza Solidarity Caravan faced a dilemma. How could some friends be left behind because of the whims of Egyptian government? But in the end the Iranian members prevailed over the group and convinced everybody that even they would be most happy only if the caravan reaches Gaza. Nothing is more serious that the pain and suffering of people of Gaza, who were looking forward to the arrival of First Asia to Gaza Solidarity caravan. They could not be disappointed. Hence a decision was taken by consensus for the caravan to move ahead.

Free Gaza India Asia People's Movement against Israeli Occuption

On 30th December the caravan members cheered the staff of Latakia Port as they loaded humanitarian aid - food, medicines, stationery for children and four ambulances - on the ship appropriately named 'Salam' or peace by raising pro-Palestine slogans. Eight members of the caravan, Brigadier Sudhir Sawant, former MP, Ajit Sahi, senior journalist, Sheheen Kattiparambil, young activist of Jamat-e-Islami, Aslam Khan, student leader of AISA, all from India, Koichi Sakaguchi from Japan, Hakim Alizade from Azerbaijan, Muhammad Husein from Indonesia and Norazli Bin Musa from Malaysia were given the responsibility to accompany the ship to Al Arish port in Egypt.

On the new year's day of 2011 the ship sailed from the Latakia port amidst cheering by the remaining members of the caravan and Latakian citizens. The Governor of Latakia accompanied by the Baath Party chief was there on both ocassions, when the loading was taking place as well as when it sailed. The send off became quite emotional as there was a realization that Israelis may intercept the ship in mid water. Ajit Sahi speaking before the ship's departure said that in case of any mishappening, this caravan to Gaza must not stop and there should be more such caravans. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi he said bravery is not in killing people but in sacrificing one's life fighting against injustice. It is amazing how Gandhi has become relevant for the Asia to Gaza caravan. Historically, he had disapproved of the creation of Israel and said Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English and France to the French. The flags of India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Azerbaijan and Palestine were waved by caravan members on board as the ship left the shores of Latakia.

Free Gaza India Asia People's Movement against Israeli Occuption

The humanitarian aid will be joined by rest of the members of caravan who will fly to Al Arish in Egypt and the caravan will cross the nearby Rafah border to enter Gaza on 2nd January, exactly a month after it was flagged off from Rajghat, thereby achieving its final objective.

PressTV - PA blasts Israel over latest 'war crime'

Israeli troopers firing tear gas canisters at Palestinian protesters
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has denounced Israel's killing of a Palestinian woman by subjecting the victim to tear gas inhalation as a 'war crime.'

The 36-year-old Jawahir Abu Rahmah died at the Ramallah medical compound in the central part of the occupied West Bank, having been poisoned by the active ingredient of the tear gas fired by the Israeli troops at peaceful anti-Israeli protesters on Friday, the Palestinian Ma'an news agency reported.

"We condemn this abominable crime by the Israeli occupation Army in Bilin,” PA's chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Saturday, referring to the western West Bank village, where the crackdown had taken place, AFP reported.

The PA would regard the incident as “an Israeli war crime against our people," he added.

Organizers said that 1,000 people joined the year's final protest against Tel Aviv's land appropriations, which was also attended by the PA's caretaker Prime Minister Salam Feyadh, Ma'an said.

Mohammed Khatib with the local popular committee said, "We are shocked and furious for Israel's brutality, which once again cost the life of a peaceful demonstrator. Israel's lethal and inhumane response to our struggle will not pass. In the dawn of a new decade, it is time for the world to ask Israel for accountability and to bring about an end to the occupation."

Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, B'tselem, has accused the forces of using banned and deadly tear gas canisters against the demonstrators.

Hamas condemns Alexandria church bombing

[ 01/01/2011 - 02:49 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas condemned the recent bombing in Alexandria, Egypt, assigning the blame to "hidden hands that do not wish well for Egypt and its people and seek to inflame sectarian strife".

"We learned with deep sorrow news of the Alexandria church bombing that killed more than twenty Muslim and Christian Egyptian citizens," Hamas said in a statement Saturday.

"We point the finger at parties who do not wish well for Egypt and its Muslim and Christian people, and seek to ignite sectarian strife, which we ask Allah to spare the people from," the group stated.

Hamas in its statement sent condolences to Egypt and the victims' families, and hoped that facts would be disclosed the soonest and that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Official source: Egypt will allow Asia aid convoy to cross into Gaza on Sunday

[ 01/01/2011 - 01:52 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- The government committee against the siege said the Egyptian authorities will allow Asia aid convoy to cross into the besieged Gaza Strip on Sunday and stay there until next Thursday.

An official source from the committee stated that the humanitarian aid of the convoy will be shipped from the Syrian port of Latakia to the Egyptian port of Arish, while members of the convoy will fly to Cairo on Sunday morning.

The source noted that the Egyptian authorities decided to ban the entry of 60 participants in the convoy, mostly from Iran and Jordan, and allow in only 120 of them.

He added that the convoy represents 135 Asian civil institutions and is composed of seven trucks and four ambulances laden with food and medical supplies.

The government committee will hold a news conference upon the arrival of the convoy at Rafah border crossing.

In another incident, coordinator of Al-Quds convoys in Libya Nuri Ben Othman said that the arrangements are still underway to facilitate the travel of the aid convoy Al-Quds 5 to Gaza through the Egyptian lands.

Ben Othman added that the convoy is composed of 18 trucks loaded with medical supplies and appliances, food, equipment for people with special needs and generators, noting that this humanitarian campaign is supported and supervised by the Libyan leadership.

RAMALLAH - THE death of a Palestinian woman who inhaled tear gas fired by Israeli troops at a West Bank protest is a 'war crime,' the Palestinian leadership said on Saturday.

'We condemn this abominable crime by the Israeli occupation army in Bilin against people taking part in a peaceful demonstration and consider it an Israeli war crime against our people,' chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat told AFP.

Jawaher Abu Rahma, 36, died overnight after she inhaled tear gas fired by Israeli troops on Friday at a protest against the the West Bank separation barrier, Palestinian medics said on Saturday.

The army said on Friday that it used unspecified 'means of dispersing demonstrations' against some 250 violent protesters taking part in a weekly rally against the fence near the West Bank village of Bilin. -- AFP

PNN - Palestine News Network - Selective Law Enforcement Against Activist for Bedouins

31.12.10 - 12:12

Adam Keller – For PNN - The court this week has been especially harsh with al-Okbi, because of his activism – so as "to send a message to the Bedouins". Al-Okbi collapsed after the sentencing. He is now hospitalized at the Assaf Harofeh Hospital under police supervision, handcuffed to the bed.

Nuri al-Okbi, head of the Association for Protection of the Rights Bedouins in Israel and also active for the rights of the Arab residents of Lod, many of whom were originally Negev Bedouins, was sentenced to seven months imprisonment on charges of "running a business without a license".

The business in question is a garage which al-Okbi has been maintaining since 1964 in Lod. Over the years, the Municipality of Lod's policy has undergone unpredictable changes, with the garage getting a permit in some years and being denied it in others.

Following the verdict, al-Okbi said: "I have become the target of politically-motivated discrimination and intimidation, with the intention of gagging me, putting an end to my speaking out against the municipality's policies - for example, the demolition of seven homes of Arab residents about a week ago. The Police, Fire Department, the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of the Environment all certified that my garage conformed to all regulations.

Nevertheless, the municipality had deprived me of a business license, while granting one to people in my neighborhood whose businesses were started after my garage. I am sure that if I had been ready to toe the line dictated by the municipality, I would have had no problem in obtaining a license. Their real problem is not my garage, but my public activity."

Following the harsh verdict, al-Okbi – who is 68 years old and suffers from a heart condition - felt bad and was hospitalized at the Assaf Harofeh Hospital, where he is hospitalized under police supervision and his hands and feet handcuffed to the bed. The police also prevented al-Okbi's son, who came to the hospital, from talking to him.

Originally, the court seemed inclined to let al-Okbi perform community service in lieu of imprisonment, and in fact he already made arrangements with a Ramla soup kitchen which was interested in having him. At the last moment, however, Judge Zachariya Yemini of the Ramla Magistrate's Court decided to act severely and imposed a seven months' term - rather than six months, the maximum term which under Israeli law can be commuted to community service. In his verdict, the judge, referring to his human rights work specifically noted that "treating the defendant leniently would constitute a negative message to the public, and especially to the Bedouins" – i.e. his activism on behalf of the Bedouin community was the specific and explicit reason why he was treated severely.

Adv. Avi Dubin, al-Okbi's lawyer, asked the court to delay implementation so as to facilitate the lodging of an appeal, but the judge conditioned such a delay upon the immediate depositing of thirty thousand shekels at the court's treasury, a sum which al-Okbi could not raise – whereupon he was immediately taken off to imprisonment.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed on al-Okbi a fine amounting to forty thousand shekels, failure to pay which would lead to his undergoing four hundred additional days in prison. Adv. Dubin filed an appeal against this verdict. "I hope that in the deliberations of a higher court, Israel's judicial system would show more consideration to Nuri al-Okbi.

There is no justification for the severe treatment meted to him" says Adam Keller, spokesperson of Gush Shalom, who has long followed Nuri al-Okbi's struggle for the rights of the Negev Bedouin community.

From a Popular Struggle Coordination Committee press release:

See here for a video of his shooting.

Mohammed Khatib, a member of the Bil'in Popular Committee said this morning: "We are shocked and furious for Israel's brutality, which once again cost the life of a peaceful demonstrator. Israel's lethal and inhumane response to our struggle will not pass. In the dawn of a new decade, it is time for the world to ask Israel for accountability and to bring about an end to the occupation."

Adv. Michael Sfard, who represents the village in an appeal against the Wall added: "The son was killed by a directly aimed projectile, the daughter choked in gas. Two brave protestors against a regime that kills the innocent and doesn't investigate its criminals. We will not quiet, we will not give up, we will not spare any effort until those responsible will be punished. And they will."

Israel to upgrade rocket system on Apache helicopters

[ 01/01/2011 - 10:36 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- The Israeli military will soon purchase special anti-personnel bombs that will be attached to the air force's Apache helicopters, the Israeli daily Haaretz said Friday.

The projectiles will be more effective than the US Hellfire anti-tank missiles currently set up on the choppers in targeting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Tensions have been running high on the Israeli-Gazan border. Israel has recently deployed along the boundary a battalion of heavily armed tanks that can shield anti-tank missiles.

Israeli Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi announced earlier that an advanced rocket pinpointed and hit a tank along the border with no report of injury.

The Israeli army has been threatening to kick off a new offensive on the region. Gaza resistance fighters take the threats seriously and are gearing for battle.

The Islamic Jihad Movement's armed wing the Quds Brigades claimed responsibility for firing 8 mortar shells targeting an Israeli force which was mobilizing near the Nahal Oz military site east of Gaza city on Friday.

"We announce responsibility for the operation to stress the resistance's right to respond to any Israeli aggression against our people and to proceed to resist and fight till full liberation of our land."

Jawahir Abu Rahmah, 36 year old woman from Bil’in

Published 01/01/2011 11:41

Gaza-bound Asian Convoy 1 moves to Egypt

[ 01/01/2011 - 09:13 AM ]

DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- The Gaza-bound Asian Convoy 1 will set sail Saturday to Port El-Arish in Egypt from Syria before landing at its final destination.

The goods on board the Sierra Leonne-bannered "Salam" ship are estimated at 3 tons of food and medical aid alongside three ambulances, said convoy coordinator Yousef Abbas in a press statement.

Ten of the convoys 120 members will accompany the ship by sea while the remaining activists will time their travel by air from Lattakia, Syria to coincide with the vessel's arrival in Egypt slated for Sunday.

The Lebanese mission, participating in the Asian Convoy to Break the Gaza Siege, has already left for Gaza as an element of the more inclusive Asian Convoy 1, announced Dib Hijazi, senior official of the Lebanese national initiative to break the Gaza siege.

The Asian Campaign, on an invite by the Lebanese initiative, paid a visit earlier to Beirut where they held civil and press meetings.

Farwana: Israel kidnapped 4,168 Palestinians in 2010

[ 01/01/2011 - 08:35 AM ]

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Specialist in prisoners' affairs Abdulnasser Farwana said that the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) detained 4,168 Palestinian citizens in 2010, at an average of 11 detainees every day.

In a report released on Friday, Farwana added that the past year witnessed a rise in the Israeli violations against prisoners, where the prison administrations escalated their arbitrary measures against them and issued decisions that worsened their incarceration conditions.

He also stressed that the list of patients imprisoned in Israeli jails broadened and the use of excessive force against prisoners became a phenomenon in all prisons.

The specialist noted that two detainees, Ra'ed Abu Hammad and Mohamed Abdin, died last year as a result of torture and medical neglect and both of them were from occupied Jerusalem.

He appealed to the international institutions to give up its silence on the issue of Palestinian prisoners and move to defend its laws that are flouted and violated on a daily basis by Israel.

In a related context, a senior leader of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails said that the prison administrations escalated their search raids on sections and rooms of detainees at the pretext of looking for cell phones, but in fact these break-ins are part of Shalit law which is implemented gradually.

The Israel government earlier last year approved Shalit law that is aimed at aggravating the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in its jails in an attempt to pressure the captors of soldier Gilad Shalit to make concessions in the prisoner swap talks

The leader added that these search raids are not primarily aimed at searching for cell phones as the prison administrations claim, and what proves that is the fact that they also take place in jails known for its strict security measures.

He affirmed that many prisoners suffered heavy material losses because when Israeli troops raid the cells they deliberately wreak havoc on everything they find on their way.

In a separate incident, the Palestinian prisoners in Hadarim jail demanded the prison administration to remove the cell phone jamming devices which are used inside, saying these devices may cause serious diseases like cancer among them.

They said that the prison administration used these jammers after intensive violent raids over two months on their rooms.

IOF declares Bilin closed military zone

[ 01/01/2011 - 07:22 AM ]

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) imposed a tight military siege on the Ramallah village of Bilin on Friday after declaring it a closed military zone to ward off expected anti separation wall demonstrations.

Local sources noted that the IOF soldiers were deployed at the entrances to the village and blocked foreign journalists and a number of Arab and local media from entering the village.

Hebrew media said that the IOF was trying to prevent the weekly anti wall march, noting that the military order banned civilian traffic in and out of the village.

However, many succeeded in entering the village and participating in the march, which has been weekly organized for many years against the construction of the racist, separation wall that confiscated more than 2000 dunums of village land, mostly cultivated land lots.

The Hebrew media reported that the demonstrators threw stones at the soldiers and tried to reach the wall but were confronted by rubber coated bullets and gas canisters that injured at least one demonstrator while others were treated for breathing difficulty.

Ashkenazi with IOF troops storm Yusuf’s tomb

[ 31/12/2010 - 09:30 PM ]

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Israeli occupation chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi accompanied by IOF troops, Friday at dawn, stormed Yusuf’s tomb in the northern West Bank city of Nablus with strict protection provided by the IOF and Abbas’s militia.

Local sources said that IOF troops raided circled the area of the tomb after midnight and snipers took positions on rooftops in preparation for the storming which has become a recurring event by settlers and occupation troops who are trying to establish a permanent presence at the tomb.

Israeli radio said that Ashkenazi was accompanied by the two chiefs rabbis Yona Mtzger (Ashkenazi Rabbi) and Shlomo Amar (Sephardi Rabbi) to inspect the renovation work being carried out on the tomb, indicating intentions to take the tomb over.

This “visit” provokes fear that the situation at the tomb will return to how it was before the start of the Aqsa Intifada in 2000 when settlers visited the tomb regularly and stayed overnight at the site, encouraged by the security provided by Abbas’s militia.

Settler organisations have been calling for this for some time citing that security fears that prevented their return to the site are no longer valid.

Haneyya stresses rejection of occupation’s “alternative homeland plan”

[ 31/12/2010 - 09:28 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- The Palestinian Prime Minister of the Gaza government, Ismail Haneyya, received an official Jordanian delegation headed the Jordanian Army Chief of Staff, Major General Mahmoud Freihat.

He told the delegation that the Palestinian government in Gaza will not accept the so called “alternative homeland" or for the solution of the Palestinian problem to be at the expense of Jordan or Jordanian territory under any conditions.

He praised the Jordanian efforts especially to help the blockaded people of Gaza and called on Jordan to play a role in preventing any Israeli escalation against the Gaza Strip.

The Prime Minster that on the second anniversary of the war on Gaza the effects of the aggression are still there, especially the destroyed homes which have not been rebuilt because of the blockade.

For his part Freihat expressed appreciation for the Prime Minister’s position on the “alternative homeland” and praised the steadfastness of the Palestinian people, adding that Jordan will not stop at providing the hospital, but will try to build schools and mosques and participate in the building of Gaza.

Bourini: International silence encourages settlers’ assaults

[ 31/12/2010 - 05:42 PM ]

AL-KHALIL, (PIC) Husni al-Bourini, MP for the district of Nablus, expressed concern over the escalation in settlers’ attacks against Palestinians, the latest of which was on Wednesday night when settlers stoned Palestinian cars travelling on the road that links the northern to the central West Bank near the Shilo and Eli settlements.

He said in a written statement on Thursday that the international official silence constitutes a “cover for the settlers’ attacks and helps their repetition,” warning of the dangers the settlers pose to the roads and villages close to the settlements were settlers’ attacks take place daily.

He called on the Fatah authority to play a role in confronting these Zionist excesses by stopping its war against the resistance, so that the resistance could defend the Palestinian people.

TOUBAS, (PIC)-- A group of extremist Jewish settlers in the northern West Bank district of Toubas confiscated vast areas of Palestinian-owned land around the Rotim settlement.

Palestinian eyewitnesses said on Thursday that dozens of settlers raided on Wednesday night lands adjacent to the Rotim and confiscated about 30 dunums (1 dunum= 100sq meters), one of the settlers even started ploughing the land.

Aref Daragmeh, local head of Bedouin council said that the confiscated land belonged to four Palestinian citizens, two of them from the same family.

He called on human rights organisations to help Palestinians protect their land.
