By: Mitri I. Musleh - It is for the first time, the Arab diplomats stand united behind their decision to rule out a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations without receiving a commitment from Israel which would ensure their success.

The Israeli politicians, realizing the seriousness of such decision, are asking the international community to appeal to the Palestinians to change their stance and agree to come back to the negotiating table.

The Palestinian leadership suspended the direct negotiations with Israel for as long as the later continues with its plans on expanding settlement build-up on illegally occupied Palestinian lands.

The irony of such a dilemma rests within the international community’s stand on the issue and Israel’s insistence of expanding their settlements.

The international community, including the US, is not in total agreement with the violations being committed by the Israeli politicians. However, not one single country or leader, in the world, has the courage to stand behind the truth and tries to make a difference in the world.

This is not the first time that Israel is in violation of international law and yet, rather than the international community trying to end Israel’s aggressive behavior, it chose to blame the victim which happened to be the Palestinians for whatever wrong doings Israel’s leaders are committing.

The Israeli action to expand its illegal settlements is obvious. In any future agreement, that may include the establishment of a Palestinian state, one must accept the fact that evicting Israeli settlements with large population is not a practical solution to any peace negotiations. Further, any future boundaries of a Palestinian state must exclude these large settlements. The Israeli plan is to illegally confiscate as much land as possible from the West Bank and in Jerusalem. Such move would ultimately make the Palestinian state nothing more than fragmented small parcels of land totally surrounded by Israel from all directions. The vision of a Palestinian state, as designed by Israel, would become the largest outdoor prison in history.

The Palestinians are very aware of this fact. The Palestinian leaders will never commit to the establishment of a fragmented state. Having said this, and long before the Palestinian people can even fathom about negotiating their own state, they must be unified in objective and direction.

For the first time ever, the scale of justice is tipped in favor of the Palestinian people. More people in the world are not buying into the Israeli propaganda and are convinced with the injustices done to the Palestinian people for the past 6 decades. It is also interesting to note that there are more countries in the world that are prepared to recognize a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Israeli politicians are playing their last card in an attempt to deliver an apartheid Palestinian state. In the process, they are prolonging the process in the hopes that Palestinians will eventually accept the Israeli offer of a fragmented state just for the sake of getting rid of a crippling Israeli occupation.

The resolution passed by the US House of Representatives, condemning unilateral attempts to gain recognition of a Palestinian state and for obvious reasons, should come as no surprise to any one.

If the US uses its veto power to block any UN resolution passed to recognize a Palestinian state, the Palestinians should have one option left to follow.

The Palestinians should follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela and use nonviolent civil disobedient resistance to achieve equal rights and liberties within the state of Israeli.
