NAZARETH, GAZA, (PIC)-- Avigdor Lieberman, the extremist Israeli foreign minister, has called on the EU to form and deploy "special" international forces along the borders between Gaza Strip and Egypt to "limit smuggling of weapons into the Strip." After meeting with Catherine Ashton, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, on Wednesday in the occupied Jerusalem, Lieberman said" If you want to end the siege on Gaza, then you should form strong and true international force and deploy it at the Gaza borders with Egypt to halt smuggling of weapons into the Strip". Ashton had repeatedly called on the Israeli occupation government to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip and to allow reconstruction activities in it after tens of thousands of Palestinian homes were destroyed during the Israeli war on the Strip a couple of years ago, but to no avail. For his part, Fawzi Barhoum, the spokesperson of Hamas Movement in Gaza, rejected Lieberman’s proposal, saying the international community needs to pressure the Zionist entity to end the siege being illegal without the need for deploying any foreign forces along the borders of the Strip with Egypt. He described Lieberman's proposal as "deceptive" and clear disavowal from international obligations. "The international community has failed till now to deter the Zionist entity or force it end the siege on Gaza, and thus, what Lieberman has said was an Israeli attempt to escape international calls to rescind the blockade" Barhoum confirmed in an interview with the Quds Press on Wednesday. "The siege on the Gaza Strip does not need international forces but rather decisive and sincere international decisions to end it," he added, explaining that the borders between the Gaza Strip and Egypt is calm and peaceful that doesn’t need international force to secure it. He also invited Ashton to visit the Gaza Strip again and see for herself the volume of destruction left by the deadly war the Zionist entity waged on it, and to see for herself the volume of suffering among the Palestinian people living there, urging her to keep the momentum for lifting the unjust siege immediately. |
