Israeli warplanes have carried out a series of airstrikes on Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian officials said that three civilians were injured when Israeli F-16s launched four airstrikes on tunnels beneath Rafah that run under the border with Egypt.The injured have been taken to a local hospital, they said. The Israeli military has not commented on the airstrikes so far. Israel has repeatedly attacked Gaza since its 22-day war on the territory.
Gazans are forced to bring in vital goods through tunnels under the border with Egypt since the coastal enclave has been under an Israeli siege since 2007.
On December 18, at least five people were killed by an Israeli aerial assault on the town of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. The attack was one of the deadliest carried out by the Israeli military since Tel Aviv’s December 2008-January 2009 war on the Gaza Strip, which left more than 1,400 dead and inflicted heavy damage — estimated to be above USD 1.6 billion — on the coastal territory’s economy.
