I express my concern about FB disabling the accounts for no reason. FB’s supposed to be a social site and it defeats the purpose of the service when the accounts of popular and active users are randomly disabled, thus cutting them off from …their network of contacts and destroying irrevocably what they have spent months and/or years building up here: photo albums, notes, groups, personal updates via facebook mobile and all the information of a personal nature stored in the mailbox, etc.

Palestinian medical sources reported Thursday that six Palestinians were wounded, one seriously, after a group of armed Israeli settlers invaded Qasra village, near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
The attack was carried out on Thursday afternoon after Israeli soldiers dismantled an illegal settlement outpost that was installed on privately-own Palestinian lands.
The settlers hurled stones at the residents and their homes, and fired rounds of live ammunition. They also torched a car that belongs to resident, Ayman Taiseer.
The extremist armed settlers also attacked several residents, local sources reported.
The sources added that Israeli soldiers were at the scene but did not attempt to prevent the attack.
The seriously wounded resident was identified as Tareq Qareedy, 44, while the rest were identified as Nafiz Kharyoush, 19, Ramzi Odah, 18, Abed Hasan, 65, Ahmad Hasan, 16, and Fathi Fayez Hasan, 64.
Qasra village is located close to several settlements and illegal settlement outpost, and was repeatedly attacked by the settlers.

PCHR Weekly Report: 4 Palestinians killed, 6 wounded by Israeli forces this week « 63 Years Occupation is Enough | فلسطين
Friday January 14, 2011 09:19 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News
In its Weekly Report On Israeli Human Rights Violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory for the week of 06-12 January 2011, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) found that Israeli forces killed 4 Palestinians, including 3 civilians, and wounded 6 others, including a child, in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces continued to target Palestinian workers, farmers and fishermen in border areas in the Gaza Strip. Israeli forces abducted 4 Palestinian fishermen, including two children.
In addition, Israeli warplanes attacked a number of targets in the Gaza Strip, and Israeli forces continued to use force against peaceful protests in the West Bank.
Israeli attacks in the West Bank:
Israeli forces conducted 40 incursions into Palestinian communities in the West Bank this week, during which they abducted 15 Palestinian civilians, including a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and 3 children. On 07 January 2011, Israeli forces killed an elderly man who was asleep in his bed in Hebron. The soldiers stormed the second floor of the building, where 'Omar Saleem Suleiman al-Qawasmi, 66, lives with his wife and their disabled son. Al-Qawasmi is a relative and a neighbor of an activist of Hamas. Israeli soldier broke into the house pointing their guns in the face of the wife who was awake. They then fired at al-Qawasmi who was sleeping from a range of two meters. He was instantly killed. Parts of his brain fell onto the bed. They then took the wife and her disabled son Yousef, 45, out of the room.
When they verified that the victim was not the wanted person, Wa'el Sa'id al-Beitar, they left the house taking the victim's body with them. They raided the first floor of the building and arrested al-Beitar. Later, Israeli forces delivered al-Qawasmi's body to an ambulance of Palestinian Red Crescent Society. According to medical sources, the victim was hit by many bullets, mostly in the head and the chest, and parts of his face and head were crushed. Israeli forces admitted responsibility for the attack, but claimed that Israeli soldiers fired at the victim by mistake. An Israeli military spokesman claimed that the soldiers "fired at him thinking that he was armed and might pose a threat to their lives." Israeli soldiers claimed that they thought the victim was a wanted person.
On 08 January 2011, Israeli soldiers positioned at al-Hamra checkpoint, southeast of Tubas, killed a Palestinian civilian. Initial investigations conducted by Israeli forces indicated that the victims did not pose and threat to the lives of Israeli soldiers. It is worth noting that Israeli soldiers positioned at the same checkpoint killed another Palestinian civilian in similar circumstances on 02 January 2011.
In his testimony to PCHR, 'Adnan Mohammed Ghunaimi, 43, an ambulance driver, stated: "At approximately 11:20 on Saturday, 08 January 2011, while I was on duty in Palestine Red Crescent Society, we received several phone calls from people, institution and security services that there was a wounded individual at al-Hamra checkpoint. Immediately, I, accompanied by two paramedics, drove the ambulance towards the checkpoint. We arrived there at approximately 11:45. We stopped about 300 meters away from the checkpoint. Israeli soldiers asked us what we were doing there and we told them that we learnt that there was a wounded Palestinian at the checkpoint. They asserted that, but prevented us from attending him, claiming that he might be carrying a weapon. They ordered us to move back up to 700 meters away from the checkpoint. At approximately 13:30, Israeli soldiers called on us through megaphones ordering us to prepare. We waited until 13:55, when they allowed us to move forward. We reached the victim. His face was to the ground and he was completely naked. He was covered with blood. He was hit by a bullet to the chest and another one to the abdomen. His wound was apparently not lethal, but he bled too much, so he died."
On 10 January 2011, a Palestinian civilian was wounded when Israeli forces that had moved into Beit Liqya village, west of Ramallah, fired at a number of children and young men who threw stones at Israeli military vehicles.
During the reporting period, Israeli forces used excessive force to disperse peaceful demonstrations organized in protest to Israeli settlement activities and the construction of the annexation wall. As a result, 4 Palestinian civilians, including a child, were wounded, and dozens of Palestinian civilians and international human rights defenders suffered from tear gas inhalation or sustained bruises. Israeli forces also abducted a Palestinian civilian.
On 09 January 2011, Israeli forces, accompanied by bulldozers, moved into Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem. They besieged the headquarters of Hajj Amin al-Husseini, mufti of Jerusalem and Arab nationalist leader during British rule of Palestine, which is known as "Shepherd Hotel." They demolished the northern part of the building, which was added to the structure in the 1960s, before the heirs of Hajj Amin al-Husseini were able to obtain a court ruling suspending the demolition of the structure, which was built in the 1930s, indefinitely. Israeli forces claim that the land on which the structure stands belongs to Irving Moskowitz, a Jewish US millionaire, and that he took all necessary steps to demolish the building.
On 10 January 2011, Israeli forces demolished two horse stables and confiscated two horses in East Jerusalem.
On 12 January 2011, Israeli forces removed a commercial kiosk of kitchen tools belonging to Wa'el al-Razem in Sultan Suleiman Street in Jerusalem. Israeli forces also confiscated goods. According to al-Razem, he established the kiosk more than 11 years ago, and he had not received any warning to remove it. He estimated his loss at approximately 150,000 NIS.
On Wednesday, 12 January 2011, during a wide scale military operation, Israeli forces demolished several Palestinian civilian facilities in the southeast of Yatta town, south of Hebron. They demolished 11 houses, in which 27 individuals, including 17 children, live, 3 classrooms, 3 barnyards and 3 tents claiming that they are close to the annexation wall. According to investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 07:40, Israeli forces, accompanied by bulldozers, moved into the area after declaring it a closed military zone. They surrounded the elementary school in the area and forced teachers and students out. They then demolished 3 classrooms. Israeli forces then moved towards the residential community in the area. They forced residents of a number of houses out and demolished them together with a number of barnyards.
Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip:
In the Gaza Strip, on 10 January 2011, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian farmer who was working on his land in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun. At approximately 14:05, Israeli soldiers positioned at the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel to the north of the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun opened fire at a number of Palestinian farmers in al-Mazbala area in the north of the town. As a result, Sha'ban Mohammed Qarmout, 64, was wounded by several bullets to the heart, when he was farming his land, nearly 550 meters away from the border. He was evacuated to Beit Hanoun hospital, where he was pronounced clinically dead. At approximately 14:45, he was pronounced physically dead.
On 11 January 2011, Israeli forces extra-judicially executed an activist of the al-Quds Brigades (the armed wing of Islamic Jihad) in the southern Gaza Strip. An Israeli drone fired the victim while he was riding a motorcycle. They claimed that he was "preparing for a terrorist attack." A civilian bystander was also wounded.
During the reporting period, Israeli warplanes attacked a number of targets in the Gaza Strip. They bombarded a number of training sites of Palestinian resistance groups.
On 07 January 2011, Israeli gunboats opened fire at Palestinian fishing boats in the northern Gaza Strip, but no casualties were reported. On 11 January 2011, Israeli forces arrested 4 Palestinian fishermen, including two children, but released them later, excluding one.
Israel has continued to impose a total siege and has isolated the Gaza Strip from the outside world. The illegal Israeli-imposed closure of the Gaza Strip, which has steadily tightened since June 2007, has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the Gaza Strip.
The illegal closure has caused not only a humanitarian crisis but a crisis of human rights and human dignity for the population of the Gaza Strip. Measures declared recently to ease the blockade are vague, purely cosmetic and fail to deal with the root causes of the crisis, which can only be addressed by an immediate and complete lifting of the closure, including lifting the travel ban into and out of the Gaza Strip and the ban on exports. PCHR is concerned that the new Israeli policy is simply shifting Gaza to another form of illegal blockade, one that may become internationally accepted and institutionalized. Palestinians in Gaza may no longer suffer from the same shortage of goods, but they will remain economically dependent and unable to care for themselves, and socially, culturally and academically isolated from the rest of the world.
Israeli settlement activities:
Israel has continued its settlement activities in the West Bank in violation of international humanitarian law, and Israeli settlers have continued to attack Palestinian civilians and property.
On Saturday, 08 January 2011, Israeli settlers from "Gilad" settlement, east of Qalqilya, attacked agricultural property belonging to 'Aadel Hassan Yamin, 54, from Jeet village northeast of Qalqilya. As a result, the cover of a water hole was damaged.
On 10 January 2011, Israeli forces moved into Khillat al-Jammal area in the southeast of Beit Liqya village, west of Ramallah. They handed noticed to Palestinian civilians ordering stopping the construction of a house and 3 barracks claiming that they were being built without licenses.
On 10 January 2011, Israeli forces, accompanied by bulldozers, moved into 'Azzoun 'Atma village, southeast of Qalqilya. They demolished two houses. These house are located nearly 500 meters away from "Oranit" settlement and nearly 120 meters away from the annexation wall.
On 12 January 2011, during a wide scale military operation, Israeli forces demolished several Palestinian civilian facilities in the southeast of Yatta town, south of Hebron. They demolished 11 houses, in which 27 individuals, including 17 children, live, 3 classrooms, 3 barnyards and 3 tents claiming that they are close to the annexation wall. Israeli forces also arrested 3 Palestinian civilians.
Israeli Annexation Wall:
During the reporting period, Israeli forces used force against peaceful demonstrations organized by Palestinian civilians and international and Israeli human rights defenders in protest to the construction of the Wall and settlement activities in the West Bank. As a result, 4 Palestinian civilians, including a child, were wounded. Dozens of Palestinian civilians and human rights defenders also suffered from tear gas inhalation and others sustained bruises. Additionally, Israeli forces arrested a Palestinian civilian.
Following the Friday Prayer on 07 January 2011, dozens of Palestinian civilians and international and Israeli human rights defenders organized a peaceful demonstration in Bil'ein village, west of Ramallah, in protest to the construction of the annexation wall. The demonstrators included a number of PLC Members; Israeli Knessent Member Mohammed Baraka; Ms. Louisa Morgantini, former Deputy Speaker of the European Parliament; and a number of observers from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the EU and the US consulate. The demonstrators raised the Palestinian flag and portraits of Bassem and Jawaher Abu Rahma, who were killed by Israeli forces in the village. They moved towards the annexation wall. Israeli soldiers stationed in the area fired rubber-coated metal bullets, sound bombs and tear gas canisters at the demonstrators. As a result, 3 Palestinian civilians, including a child, were wounded.
Additionally, a number of demonstrators suffered from tear gas inhalation and others sustained bruises as they were beaten by Israeli soldiers.
Also following the Friday Prayer on 07 January 2011, dozens of Palestinian civilians and international and human rights defenders organized a peaceful demonstration in Ne'lin village, west of Ramallah, in protest against the construction of the annexation wall. They clashed with Israeli troops positioned near the Wall. Israeli troops fired rubber-coated metal bullets, sound bombs and tear gas canisters at demonstrators. As a result, dozens of demonstrators suffered from tear gas inhalation, and others sustained bruises.
Also following the Friday Prayer on 07 January 2011, dozens of Palestinian civilians and international and Israeli human rights defenders organized a peaceful demonstration in Nabi Saleh village, northwest of Ramallah, in commemoration of the late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, and in protest against land confiscations in the Wad al-Raya area between the villages of Nabi Saleh and Deir Nizam. When the demonstrators attempted to reach areas of land seized by Israeli settlers near "Halmish" settlement, Israeli troops fired rubber-coated metal bullets, sound bombs and tear gas canisters at them. As a result, Eyas Mohammed Sarhan, 23, was hit by a tear gas canister to the right foot. A number of demonstrators also suffered from tear gas inhalation. Israeli forces also arrested 'Odai 'Abdul Hafiz Tamimi, 21.
Recommendations to the international community:
Due to the number and severity of Israeli human rights violations this week, the PCHR made several recommendations to the international community. Among these were a recommendation that international civil society organizations, including human rights organizations, bar associations and NGOs, participate in the process of exposing those accused of grave breaches of international law and urge their governments to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The PCHR also called upon the European Union to activate Article 2 of the Euro-Israel Association Agreement, which provides that Israel must respect human rights as a precondition for economic cooperation between the EU states and Israel. PCHR further calls upon the EU states to prohibit import of goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Maan News Agency: Gaza patient dies waiting for permit to leave
Anas Saleh, 20, died on January 1 from a liver disease. He had been unconscious for several days in Gaza's Ash-Shifa Hospital before his death. His doctors had sought permission for Saleh to enter Israel for treatment.
After the request was made Israeli authorities insisted that the unconscious patient appear for questioning by the Israel Security Agency, a report from the Al-Mezan center for human rights said.
A second rights organization based in Haifa, Adalah, had its Attorney Fatmeh El-Ajou file a complaint about the incident on behalf of the victim.
Following Saleh's death, Adalah, on behalf of three rights organizations, submitted a complaint to the Attorney General of Israel, Yehuda Weinstein and to the Israeli Military Advocate General, Avichai Mendelblit, demanding the opening of a criminal investigation and prosecution of those responsible for "the suspicious death" of Saleh.
The human rights organizations argue in the complaint that the denial of an exit permit as the patient remained critical was "an act against the legal obligation to provide medical treatment to save the life of the patient, an act which brought about, or at least hastened, the death of the deceased."
In September 2010, Saleh was diagnosed with a liver disease Budd Chiari Syndrome, a clinical syndrome resulting from obstruction of the veins in the liver. Due to a lack of appropriate medical treatment in the Gaza Strip health system, the rights group said, his condition deteriorated into acute liver failure and hepatitis.
The patient was referred to the Makassed Hospital in East Jerusalem. He had a hospital referral and appointment for 26 December 2010. On 13 December 2010 the family presented a request, via the Palestinian Liaison Office, to the Israeli authorities in order to obtain an exit permit from Gaza.
Thirteen days later, on 26 December 2010, the patient's hospital appointment date, the army informed the Palestinian Liaison Office that the patient must appear for interrogation by the Israel Security Agency on 30 December 2010 to further consider his request. However, on that date the patient was already unconscious and could not appear at the interrogation, the rights organization said in a statement.
The group said that the information was forwarded by the Palestinian health coordinator to the Israeli military on that same day, with a request to speed up the request procedure and to issue an exit permit from Gaza urgently.
Following the urgent request, the rights groups said the ISA "continued to insist that the patient appear for questioning."
According to testimony from Saleh's father taken by Al-Mezan, on 28 December he received a telephone call from a man who introduced himself as an ISA representative, and requested that his ill son present himself for questioning on the following day. The father informed him that his son was in a coma and asked that he be allowed to leave for medical treatment without delay.
Throughout this process, medical documents substantiating the patient’s medical condition were transmitted to the Israeli authorities, the rights groups say, noting a final medical document confirming the patient’s critical condition was sent on 29 December.

PNN - Palestine News Network - Erdogan: Hamas is Not a Terrorist Movement, They're Defending Their Land
Istanbul – PNN – Turkish Prime Minister Tayyep Recep Erdogan demanded on Wednesday that Israel apologize for its attack on a Turkish aid ship to Gaza last May in order to normalize relations.
“Hamas won the elections," he said, "but were not given the chance to rule. They are not terrorists, they are defending their land.”
During his interview with the Qatar-based Al Jazeera TV, Erdogan also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government and deemed it the worst government in the history of Israel. The Turkish PM added that Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was Israel's "greatest problem."
Erdogan was reacting to Lieberman’s comments that Turkish demands for an apology for the flotilla incident was cheeky. Erdogan added that Israelis should remove Lieberman from the government.
Turkish-Israeli relations went sour after Israeli commandos attacked the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish aid ship to Gaza, last May. The attack left 9 Turkish aid workers dead. The ship was sailing in international waters during the time of the attack. Erdogan demanded that Israeli apologize and compensate the families of those killed. Israel sent the ship back to Turkey but refused to apologize.

Bil'in demonstrations coordinator sentenced to 16 months in prison

|
RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Abdullah Abu Rahma, coordinator of the Bil'in anti-separation wall committee, was sentenced on Tuesday to 16 months in prison other than a three-year suspended sentence and was forced to pay NIS 5,000 in fines. The Israeli Ofer Court charged Abu Rahma with incitement and participation in throwing stones at Israeli soldiers, as well as participation in allegedly "illegal demonstrations". Abu Rahma was previously sentenced to a year in jail but was kept prisoner by the military prosecutor after his scheduled mid-November, 2010 release because of continued weekly protests in the Bil'in village. 24 European diplomats attended the court hearing. In a separate development, prisoner Hamza Mahmoud Ali al-Khumoor of the Bethlehem refugee camp of Al-Duhaisha has gone on his 11th day of hunger strike, prison sources said. Khumoor, arrested in April 2002 and serving an 18-year sentence, went on strike after he was placed in solitary confinement after striking a prison guard in self-defense during a heated prison search. |

Husseini family denies selling or giving Shepherd hotel to any party
[ 12/01/2011 - 08:47 AM ] |

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Al-Husseini family categorically denied that it made any deal to cede Shepherd hotel in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, affirming that the building was seized illegally and for political reasons by the Custodian of Absentee Property, Israeli official circles, and the Zionist millionaire Irving Moskowitz. A spokesman for the family, the rightful owner of the hotel, told a news conference in Jerusalem that the family would continue to defend its ownership of the building and the land surrounding it by legal means, affirming that the Israeli government sold the hotel to Moskowitz. Jerusalemite sources warned that Moskowitz wants to create a crack in the heart of Jerusalem city in order to separate what Jews call the holy basin from other parts of the city. According to a report issued by Jerusalem center for social and economic rights, the land on which Shepherd hotel was built and the settlement outposts that were created by Israel inside Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood is the beginning of the final settlement belt which Israel established in the eastern and northern parts of the Old City of Jerusalem. The center warned in a statement on Saturday that Israel's settlement schemes are aimed at changing the features of the holy city, tearing apart the Palestinian presence there, isolating the Arab neighborhoods adjacent to the Old City from its surrounding and turning them into Jewish areas. For its part, the popular front for the liberation of Palestine (PFLP) called for urgent international and Arab action to confront the settlement encroachment into the neighborhood and historical landmarks of Jerusalem and the West Bank. The PFLP on Monday stated that all international condemnations of Israel's settlement activities are useless unless they were associated with concrete measures to punish the Israeli government. |

Erdogan: Turkey will stand by Hamas
[ 13/01/2011 - 07:45 AM ] |
|
ISTANBUL, (PIC)-- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country stands by Hamas, calling the resistance movement an election-taking political party, and ruling out achieving peace in the region without them. "We stand by Hamas when they are right, because the Hamas movement is a resistance movement. I do not see Hamas as 'terrorist'. They are people who defend the land, and it is a political group that entered the elections and won the elections," Erdogan told Al-Jazeera Wednesday night. The Turkish premier accused those who call Hamas "enemies of democracy" of not giving the party a political opportunity. "They have been able to place all obstacles in front of them (Hamas) so they do not succeed in any way." Erdogan urged Quartet head Tony Blair to include Hamas in the peace process, saying: "Peace will not come out of a Hamas-excluded table." "Currently, Fatah and Hamas are two important elements in Palestine. If you see them as an element and do not see the other element, Palestinian peace will not materialize." The Turkish PM called on the Israeli government to compensate for the May 2010 attack on the Mavi Marmara ship that killed nine Turkish citizens. "We want Israel, after returning the Marmara ship to us, to apologize, to pay compensations, and thirdly, to lift the siege. Gaza is an open prison. It is not your right to sentence all those people to jail. If these demands are not met, our relations will not return to what they were." Erdogan spoke harshly against Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, saying: "Lieberman has done every despicable act." He said the current government under Netanyahu is at its worst with Turkey. |

IOF serves demolition notifications, settlers seize Palestinian land

NABLUS, (PIC)-- Israeli occupation forces (IOF) served demolition notices to a number of citizens in Jaftalk village in the northern Jordan Valley on Wednesday and told them to leave the area. Eyewitnesses said that the destruction threat covered six installations including homes and cattle pens, adding that the act fell in line with plans to confiscate the village's land. Jaftalk villagers live a primitive life as they are deprived of water and electricity services by the Israeli occupation authority, which also prevents them from building forcing the citizens to live in houses made of tin and plastic. In Nablus district, IOF troops stormed a school south of the city, the school's headmaster reported, adding that a number of settlers were accompanying the IOF. He said that an IOF armored vehicle rammed into the school's main gate. The soldiers then climbed to its rooftop to protect settlers who were visiting a nearby shrine. Meanwhile, tens of settlers from the Shilo settlement south of Nablus seized by force 25 dunums of Qaryut village land and blocked villagers from approaching it. Witnesses said that the settlers ploughed and planted the land under the protection of IOF soldiers on Wednesday. |

Hamas and Women: Clearing Misconceptions
17:12 01/12/2011 | ||
| ||
| ||
By Dr. Ahmed Yousef – Gaza Women in every society have a different perception of their respective roles, which are generally molded by social and cultural norms. Evidently in many parts of the world, these social and cultural norms have restricted women of their due rights. Islam has liberated women of such restrictions by emphasizing social equality and granting women the right to work as part of their freedom of choice. Although wearing the Hijab is a religious obligation, it is inarguably an issue between a woman and God. No one is allowed to force a woman to wear Hijab if she chooses not to, nor does the religion allow anyone to interfere with her if she chooses to take it off. Furthermore, an individual or a group of people's choice to practice their religion and follow its teachings and principles must be respected and not judged according to certain standards set by others. Women in the West were granted some of their basic rights fairly recently. Not until the 20th century were women completely allowed to work, inherit, vote, own property, and even protect themselves from violence. The feminist movement was a reaction to a male-dominant society that oppressed women on many levels. Islam, however, had freed women politically, economically, and socially since their birth, approximately 1430 years ago. Thus, feminist movements and fighting governmental institutions were never necessary. It cannot be denied that many individuals within the Islamic region, just like in every other society, oppress women regardless of all beliefs and laws. But it is crucial to note that these actions are not based on true Islamic ideology, but rather is a reflection of traditions that Islam abhors and condemns. Hamas, as an Islamic organization, is keen to implement the true Islamic principles and teachings with regards to women, completely independent of certain cultural norms and societal backwardness. Hamas, as a national liberation movement, works to put an end to the Israeli Occupation and its injustice and oppression of the Palestinian people, and has no plans in creating a state with a particular type of government. Its only goal is to end the Israeli occupation and thus all attempts to engage the whole population, regardless of gender or age, in the liberation movement is a necessity. God states in the Quran, "The Believers, men and women, are protectors of one another; they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil." Clearly, Islam entitles women and men to cooperate to fulfill their commitments. Understanding the importance of collaborative and complementary roles between men and women, Hamas engages women in all of its departments. There are female participants in the Consultative Council, which is responsible for the outline of the overall strategy of the Hamas movement and the decision-making body. There are also women who are active in the Political Bureau, Cultural Bureau, and an additional committee specialized in women's affairs within the movement. Women in Gaza play an active role in politics and their involvement in the workforce is widespread. Many women hold occupations at universities, work as doctors and engineers, run charities and schools, and even hold leadership positions in unions and students’ councils. In the elections of 2006, women in Hamas were fully mobilized to reach out to Palestinian women and encourage them to participate in the parliamentary elections. Hamas nominated tens of women for office and three of them were appointed as members of parliament, one as a minister, 60 as General Directors, and tens of others took leadership positions in different ministries. In addition, from the six Education Departments located in the Gaza Strip, three of them are directed by women. The misconception that Hamas subjugates women by implementing social restrictions and snatching away their rights is an absolute fallacy. The role of women in the Palestinian society and within the liberation movement is a momentous one. Women have proven to be significant contributors in all possible fields that include, but are not limited to, politics, education, charity, and social work. The Palestinian woman in Gaza is educated, she has a voice, and she is worth no less than any man. - Dr. Ahmed Yousef is the Deputy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Former Senior Political Adviser to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyah in Gaza. Hamas and Women: Clearing Misconceptions
Israel’s Orthodox Rabbis: ‘Palestinians to the Ovens!’ « 63 Years Occupation is Enough | فلسطين
« Tikun Olam-תקון עולם: Wednesday, January 12th, 2011
Back in the days of the Shoah, one of the slogans of the Jew haters was: “Jews to the Ovens.” Now, it causes me anguish to say, we have Israeli Orthodox rabbis saying the same about the Palestinians.
Thanks to Cicero for pointing me to a shocking passage in an Israeli Orthodox “family magazine,” Fountains of Salvation, which suggests that Israel will create death camps for Palestinians in order to wipe them out like Amalek. The article attacks Israeli rabbis who dispute the letter recently circulated from pro-settler extremist rabbis which urged that no Israeli Jew rent apartments or homes to Israeli Palestinians. It chided them for being “politically correct” and refusing to do their jobs and educate the populace in the true path of Torah (which is presumably to hate Palestinians).
The last paragraph (page 4 of the original) though is the whopper:
It will be interesting to see whether they leave the assembly of the Amalekites [Palestinians] in extermination camps to others, or whether they will declare that wiping out Amalek is no longer [historically] relevant. Only time will tell…
A few words of explanation. There is a Biblical command for Jews to wipe out Amalek because of the viciousness with which that people attacked Israelites. Essentially, this is a Jewish call to commit genocide against Amalek. We should note that the Bible records such Jewish campaigns against other tribes as well (Moabites, Jebusites) and no doubt others did the same to their enemies.
Rabbis throughout the ages have allegorized the reference to Amalek to connote any sworn enemy of the Jewish people from Hitler to Barack Obama (yes, prominent American Orthodox Jews wrote such garbage before the last election). But this is the first time I’ve ever read any Orthodox publication calling for committing genocide against Palestinians.
As Cicero pointed out to me, the articulation of this passage doesn’t only refer to Palestinians (though most likely this was specifically who the writer had in mind given the context). It can refer to any enemy of the Jewish people including you or me.
Now a word on who is behind this publication: it is the cream of the crop of the radical right-wing Israeli Orthodox rabbinate. It was founded by the former chief rabbi of Safed, whose son currently holds that position and who circulated the letter I refer to above. Another is the chief rabbi of Ramat Gan and finally Rabbi Avinar, suspected of sexually abusing a troubled woman who approached him for spiritual advice. Each of them holds paid government sinecures, allowing them to spew hate on the dime of the Israeli taxpayer.
This raises the important question: why does the U.S. government allow tax-deductible contributions to Israeli charities like Chabad given their propagation of such genocidal rhetoric?
Cicero first learned about the Chabad article from Udi Aloni’s Ynet column, which pointed it out. He points out that it has been his custom in criticizing Israelis who support the Occupation to attack the liberal elite which is characterized by the slogan “shooting and crying.” Instead, he says he now will have to pay closer attention to the radical Orthodox who “shoot and laugh.” Aloni imagines the young Orthodox boy reading this publication in his synagogue where it’s distributed, who conjures to himself with a smile on his face the picture of Palestinians standing behind barbed wire in such a camp. This is the legacy these rabbis are bequeathing to their young followers.
Finally, since I know people of all ideological stripes may read into this story what they wish, I want to make clear that this is not Judaism. These wicked men may be Jews and rabbis, but they don’t represent normative Judaism any more than Osama bin Laden represents normative Islam. Do not make the mistake of conflating this idiocy with all of Israel or all of Judaism. Yes, these men are dangerous, they are hateful, and they must be challenged. But there is another face of Judaism and another face of Israel (though that is becoming increasingly difficult to see I concede).
